Description
This new translation of one of Chekhov's greatest plays, to be premiered by the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, is the second Chekhov to be translated by Michael Frayn; the first was The Cherry Orchard. Michael Frayn, who is both proficient in Russian and already well-known as a playwright himself, is the ideal translator, with the result that the familiar Chekhovian characters are reborn in beautifully idiomatic English that allows the modern reader to appreciate the qualities of the original more fully than ever before. For this edition Michael Frayn had also provided a full introduction and a chronology of Chekhov's life and works.
