I read that many years ago when Bette Davis was being interviewed, she said that What Makes Sammy Run was the quintessential inside-Hollywood novel and the best ever written about “the industry”. True? I don’t know, but it’s a classic & sure doesn’t paint a pretty picture. Its publication in 1941 created an uproar affecting Schulberg for decades, but he grew up in a family of the old Hollywood elite and called it as he saw it.
