Sneak Peak
"You see, all you public schoolboys have a kind of freemasonry of your own, and outsiders are looked on by you much as I look on rabbits and all that isn't game. Ay, you may laugh, but it is so; and your friends will throw their eyes askance at me, and never think on my pedigree, which would beat theirs all to shivers, I'll be bound. No; I'll have no one here at the Hall who will look down on a Hamley of Hamley, even if he only knows how to make a cross instead of write his name."

Synopsis
Wives and By Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell is a compelling triller that tells the human story behind the age . The first chapter of the book shows a young Molly Gibson being reared by her widowed father, the town doctor Mr. Gibson. During a visit to the Lord and Lady Cumnor's local aristocratic "great house," Molly gets lost in the estate's grounds and passes out beneath a tree. Molly is located and sent to bed in Mrs. Kirkpatrick's chamber by Lady Cuxhaven, one of the house's daughters, and Mrs. Kirkpatrick, a previous governess to the Cumnor kids. Mrs. Kirkpatrick is referred to by her family as "Clare," the name she had been known by as a governess. Molly is reassured by Clare, who gives the impression of being a lovely person, that she would wake her up when it is time for the entourage to go. She neglects to accomplish this, leaving Molly trapped in the estate. The idea of having to spend the night there upsets her. She is relieved to see her father pick her up quickly.
