I adore season 1 of the TV show and thought I would love the book as well. However this was not the case. The ony thing I enjoyed about the book more than the show was the more detailed descriptions of alchemy and history that are glossed over in the show.
The characters are full of rough edges and unrefined tropes that significantly reduce the romanticism and magic I hoped I would find.
Broody, barely restrained, alpha male Matthew can stay between the covers. I'll stick to intellectual, refined, elegantly controlled Matthew from the show instead.
I read this book as part of my groups BOM....I'm glad I did.I was reluctant to read this , usually witches are stereotyped and made out to be pure evil etc etc. I found this book not too bad in that aspect.Diana is a witch just trying to be normal and forget she was even a witch.She became a scholar. And studied history. Then she became interested in History.This is when she called up the wrong book.You see this book is very powerful. And has been lost for centuries. A and Diana has the power to find it.I quite enjoyed this book with its fine line of fact and fiction. The author has really done her research.It still doesn't really bridge understanding of the life of wiccans or pagans ( or whatever flavour you are), which is what I thought it would be about ( I didn't realise it was just a story! ). But its a pretty good and enjoyable story
I loved this book but did not 'adore' it. Totally got sucked in though.What I really did enjoy was that it was historically based and it felt like a history lesson. It felt real and genuine.Had a bit of trouble with Diana being independent at first and not so much at the end.Would totally recommend the read.
This book has romance, mystery and spells all over it! I enjoyed it a lot, the only con about this book is a few chapters were way too long in my opinion. A lot was going on so it's okay but besides that this book is a must read! The ending felt like a note to the reader which was a nice touch!
I've been wanting to read this book for ages but never seem to find the time, well I'm very glad I finally found the time. I did find that this was a book that I could not zip through, instead I found I had to slow down and enjoy the complexities. Diana Bishop, has spent most her life denying who and what she is, a witch. Magic is not for her, it has brought her nothing but heartache. Diana has proven herself a historian, who believe is science and the past. At the Oxford's Bodleian Library, studying books and historical text, Diana stumble across a book full of magic. Once opened, Diana can no longer ignore the world of daemons, witches, and vampires. As they seem to follow her everywhere. Matthew Clairmont, is a vampire and a professor of biochemistry and neuroscience, and he wants that book he's been hunting for it for centuries. Now all he needs to do is understand this strange witch Diana Bishop. I give this book 4.5 stars, although I believe the intricate detail in the beginning of the story it started off as a slow read. Off to find the next book.
Although there are ALOT of vampire books, programmes and films out at the moment I was pleased to find a slightly new take on the genre. Thinking about it afterwards, not a huge about actually happened in the book however it still flowed at a good pace. What happen was a steady build up of the characters, premise and the settings. I thought this was very well done seeing as after finishing the book I felt immersed in the world and felt I understood the characters very well.I'm looking forward to starting the next in the series.
