Visualizza tuttoI just finished No Longer Human, and this is easily one of the best books I’ve read this year. It’s not emotional in the usual sense. It’s disturbing. It’s uncomfortable. It feels like watching someone peel their own mind apart layer by layer. The way Dazai writes about loneliness, morality, deceit, sex, class, addiction, and the whole “acting normal for other people” thing is sharp and brutally honest. Yozo’s voice is messed up, confused, intelligent, self-aware, and completely lost, and that combination makes the whole book feel real in a way that’s hard to explain. The last section hit the hardest for me. The whole synonyms and antonyms part, the talk about crime and God, and everything that happens with his wife and society closing in was just brilliant. Not dramatic, not sentimental — just raw and frightening. This wasn’t a sad read for me. It was a horrifying one. Dark, honest, and uncomfortable in the best way. One of those books that stays in your head long after you close it.
