When the pleasure-cruise spaceship runs into a marauding craft sent by the hostile and sadistic Klevii regime, the adults aboard know that there is no hope of escape, and face a stark choice between capture and suicide. But just before their commander drives their cruiser into a fatal collision they nestle their offspring into a pod and eject her into space.

Acorna is found by three young space prospectors on board an asteroid mining ship, the Khedive. Entranced by her strange appearance and miraculous want to adopt her as one of their own. But as Acorna gradually sheds her inhibitions, she begins to form her own ideas about the tasks she wants to accomplish in the worlds of space...
