I am always down to eat up a Kennedy Ryan book. Her writing is beautiful, and the characters she breathes life into feel like friends. After reading the first two books in the Skyland series, I've been not-so-patiently anticipating book three, "Can't Get Enough." In the first two books Hendrix, our FMC, is painted a tough badass boss lady who is always there for her friends. Kennedy already had me pinned in Hendrix's corner before I read the first page in this novel. To say my expectations were high is an understatement.The way Kennedy handled the deeply personal and challenging topics interwoven into the story was wonderful. She doesn't shy away from the discomfort readers will feel as they are thrown in the middle of an Alzheimer's diagnosis, racial and economic injustice, and the exploration of what makes a community. This was my favorite aspect of the book by far.The book begins with an author's note about the research and authentic experience Kennedy has with dementia, which I found admirable. Having lost my own mother to dementia last year I was looking forward to the emotional connection I was sure I'd experience with these characters and the book. But I didn't get that.The connection between Hendrix and Maverick begins strongly with their shared experience of Alzheimer's. Hendrix is a caregiver for her mother with progressing dementia, and Maverick lost his grandfather to it a few years earlier. A scorching mutual attraction and pining unwinds and, based on several circumstances, Hendrix finds it ill-timed. Maverick is persistent in his pursuit of her, even when she clearly says, 'no.' His decision that he *will* have her didn't sit well with me in an age where women are screaming "listen to us!" And, unfortunately, the more I read the harder I found it to root for Hendrix and Maverick. I found it disheartening that despite being a very strong woman, Hendrix caves and breaks promise after promise to herself when it comes to Maverick. I understand all characters have flaws, but this one made Hendrix almost unloveable after the buildup of the first two books.Hen and Mav's "we shouldn't, but we're gonna" felt like too big of a focus, pulling so much attention away from the emotional tie of the book--Hendrix's role as a caregiver. "Can't Get Enough" felt spicier than the first two books in the series, which is fine, but I wasn't expecting it and was caught off guard. I wanted to love this so much--it was one of my highest anticipated releases for 2025--but it fell flat of what I expect when reading a Kennedy Ryan book.Thank you to to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and Netgalley for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
