Danebury Environs Programme 2: The Prehistory of a Wessex Landscape (Oxford University Committee for Archaeology Monographs 48 and 49)

In 1970 Barry Cunliffe wrote 'In so far as it is possible to look towards the next few decades to guess at the direction which Iron Age studies will take, it seems tolerably certain that far more emphasis will be given to studying entire landscapes and understanding the relationships of their intrinsic elements. This means two thorough fieldwork, together with schemes of large-scale and sometimes total excavations.......' These words were written just after the second season of the excavation of Danebury had closed. Though nobody guessed it, it was the start of a major landscape study that would take twenty-eight years to complete. The project is now published in two volumes which bring together the evidence of prehistoric activity in the Danebury region, and move towards an understanding of the human communities which inhabited this part of the chalkland landscape in the first millennium BC.
