Descrizione

Edward Burra (1905-1976) was one of the most prolific, consistent and individual artists working in Britain during the 20th Century. His large watercolors, whether of macabre, sleazy and sinister subjects, or of landscapes and still life, are instantly recognizable and fix themselves in the minds with unusual tenacity.

This book accompanies Burra's first large retrospective exhibition, at the Tate Gallery, comprising approximately 140 works, some in oil, some in pen and ink, but mostly in watercolor, which he uses with great skill to produce powerful and luminous color.

The book includes an extensive introduction on the life and work of the artist, a small section of excerpts from his letters, many attesting to his abiding love of the cinema, and a list of paintings in the exhibition with many plates in color and black and white.
