Als ze de volgende ochtend hoort dat er vlakbij haar huis een vrouw dood is aangetroffen staat haar hart stil: 'Ik had haar aan haar lot overgelaten, ik had haar daar laten staan en ze was vermoord.' Het wordt er niet beter op als Cass de vrouw blijkt te hebben gekend én ze bovendien last krijgt van telefoontjes van een gemeen zwijgende onbekende. Sowieso maakt dertigster Cass zich zorgen over haar toenemende vergeetachtigheid. Wacht haar hetzelfde lot als haar onlangs gestorven moeder, die vroeg dementeerde? Voor haar kersverse man heeft ze de ziekte van haar moeder verzwegen, omdat ze bang was dat Matthew anders niet met haar zou trouwen.
Die paranoia, die angst en dat schuldgevoel van Cass - zijn die terecht? Of wordt ze gek gemáákt?

⭐️2.5-3This book is fine, nothing spectacular. Honestly, I would describe this book as just okay. Since I really liked 'Behind Closed Doors' and found it to be much more gripping, suspenseful and tension-filled, this book was kind of disappointing for me.When compared to ‘Behind Closed Doors’, ‘The Breakdown’ pales in comparison to it, as the majority of the storyline, roughly 80%, is repetitive and monotonous with the main character, Cass forgetting things as small as making plans with friends, stressing over her guilt, being afraid of the silent phone calls and the random deliveries sent to her house. During these moments, Cass is extremely passive and never follows up on clues she discovers, making the book very tedious and senseless at times. As we find out who the perpetrator is (quite predictable since the suspect pool was small, and there were hardly any characters in the book, and the perpetrator was suspicious right away), the book picks up a little in the last 20%, but it's spoiled by the rushed, anticlimactic ending.As a whole, an okay, readable read, one that I read relatively quickly, but one that unfortunately failed to wow me.
