this book is really slow and takes a while for something interesting to happen
4.5! I would say this is a mystery, but could have had more thrill. That being said though, it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Right when you think you know what is going on, another curveball is thrown at you, sometimes multiple all at once. There were many times reading this book where I just sat staring at the book with my mouth open. It was definitely hard to put down during the second half! This book follows 3 teenagers, who's parents were cut off by their mother over 20 years before. They all receive a letter inviting them to their grandmother's island resort over the summer. They hesitantly agree mainly because they want to know why their parents were cut off to begin with and why their grandmother has reached out to them now. Each chapter follows the story from one of the teenagers' point of view and every few chapters we go back in time and follow the parents when they were teenagers. As a reader, you think that this might help you find out what really happened but honestly it just brings up more questions. Through different interactions and little clues, the three try to put the puzzle pieces together and solve the mystery.Going into this book, I thought, okay so they are going to go to this resort, finally meet their grandmother and solve the mystery of the "you know what you've done" letter that their parents received so long ago. How wrong I was! Of course McManus is going to add WAY more plot twists, characters, and secrets to make this book that much better. And she definitely succeeded! There were several times where I found myself saying "oh that must be it" only to find out that it in fact wasn't and I just had more questions. Some describe this book as a roller coaster and I would agree. McManus builds up the tension, gives you the clues but then completely twists and turns what you were thinking!I also felt like the character development was spot on. You really start to love the three main characters and hate/question their parents almost as much as they do. With that many characters, it is impressive that she was able to do this so well!I could go on and on about this book. Bottom line it was an entertaining, mind spinning, amazing mystery!! Even if you are more of a mystery/thriller reader, I highly recommend this book!!
Three cousins have been asked to come help at resort that is currently owned by their grandmother. However, the last time they all saw each was during the childhood. Milly, Aubrey, and Jonah have never met their met their grandmother, as she disinherited their parents before they were born. Having each receiving a personal letter from their grandmother to work on at the family resort for the summer, curiosity get to the better of them and well as questions as to why they have never properly met & why their grandmother disowned their parents. I really enjoyed the first couple of chapters as we find out about each cousin, what they are like, and who they are as person. The cousins were not too thrilled at first to be going back to resort but Milly and Aubrey had sort of accepted it and Jonah was still annoyed as he had been accepted into a Science Camp for the summer which was apparently very hard to go into. <spoiler>Once they arrived at the resort and start working, Doland, wants to meet them. Donald offered the three another job with better pay, however, he is wanting them off the resort. We learn quiet early on that Jonah is an imposter. While their cousin Jonah (JT) is at camp he sent another Jonah in his place, which Millie spotted by putting clues together from when they first boarded the ship.</spoiler><spoiler>The plot twist keeps coming we soon learn that the bartender is indeed their uncle and learn that it was him that contacted them. Jonah kept stringing them along as he wanted to pretty much destroy the Story family name as JT dad (Milly and Aubrey’s uncle) made Jonah family bankrupt. And of course, this is when the real JT show his face as a picture got posted of Jonah during an event on the island. </spoiler><spoiler>And the plot twist keep coming when the pieces are put together, it is revealed that their grandmother isn’t who she says she is. Their grandmother had passed away 24 years ago and her good friend Theresa took her place and acted as their grandmother as she wanted revenge on the Story family for the death of her son.</spoiler>
this was actually really good i loved the characters and the dynamics and the romance like all the audio books i listen to i know i would have struggled more if i was physically reading it and i did dnf it before but i didn't give it a proper chance i think
Somehow she worked a romance into the mystery which I am so impressed with.
I thought the book was decent. The cousins building up their relationships with each other over the summer while discovering information about their family was a nice aspect. However, the book was leading up to an exciting and tense ending. Only I found the big reveal extremely anti-climatic and almost laughable.Despite this, I liked the overall character dynamics, and some were enjoyable; thus, I give it 3/5.
