Lady's Knight

Lady’s Knight was a fun read and one I was really glad I judged a book by its cover because Meagan Spooner and Amie Kaufman deliver with a sapphic romance that is set in a medieval setting. We have Gwen, a blacksmith’s daughter who was raised on tales of chivalrous knights and a noblewoman, Lady Isobelle who feels restrained by the expectation of birth and gender.They have a meet-cute moment over a stall, and from there on in? Their lives become more and more entwined through circumstance and choice - I love Gwen, and how she wants to not only be a Knight despite it not being a role for women but also because she is still very much herself. Which sounds strange given she has to pretend to be the mysterious Sir Gawain from Toulouse, but you can see she strives to achieve more than what has been planned for her. I wasn’t sure what would happen throughout the book, and loved the story and the world-building which may not be very immersive but is sufficient to draw us into this Medieval town that reminded me a little of what we see in A Knight’s Tale but there’s the possibility of dragons rather than encounters with Chaucer. Isobelle and Gwen’s romance is sweet and the two of them have moments where you’re giggling and awing over the two of them as they move from acquaintances to friends and then lovers. But this isn’t just a story of a lady Knight and her Lady, but of female empowerment and the authors shine a light on the misogyny of this fictional world. (Also in my opinion remind the reader that there are still issues over gender roles in our twenty-first-century world.) The supporting characters of Isobelle’s friends and her maid, Olivia who is very mysterious and I am curious to know exactly what she was up to before she found her way into Isobelle’s employ. The need for answers about Olivia alone has me wanting to read the sequel because there was only so much evasion I could take.This was a fun YA read, and I enjoyed the romance and seeing the women in the story fight back against the men in their lives, and how they support one another even if it’s not necessarily something they agree with. For the ladies in Lady’s Knight, their friendships come before anything else and I think many will love their camaraderie and their antics. This is very much good versus evil, and our two main ladies are brave in many aspects of their lives both as a couple and as individuals. I would have loved a little more about the witches we see a glimpse of, perhaps we will see that in the sequel when we see what Isobelle and her Knight are up to.
