Visualizza tuttoMarie Lu seamlessly presents two sides of the same coin in this YA distopian fiction; leaving you satisfied and ready for more. 4/5 ⭐I was captivated from the very beginning. The way the male lead is used is masterful. He serves as the story's hook, but, as strange as it may sound, I'd argue that he also **is** the plot.Let me explain. This is, in many ways, his story. Everything revolves around who he is, what he does, how he behaves, and where he goes. Yet that doesn't make Day the main character. Instead, he functions as a brilliantly constructed catalyst—one whose actions propel June headlong into a thrilling world of espionage, danger, and intrigue. It loses a star for a few reasons.First, this book is clearly written for a teenage audience. That doesn't mean the characters need to be driven primarily by their hormones—but that's exactly what happens, and more than once. It detracts from the stronger aspects of the story, and honestly, just doesn't make sense sometimes.Second, the characters consistently act, think, and feel more like 17- or 18-year-olds, despite the author establishing them as only 15. There's a noticeable disconnect between their maturity, the situations they find themselves in, and what feels believable for their age.
I liked the love story intertwined with the corrupt government.
