In Tom Cardamone's 2010 book The Lost Library: Gay Fiction Rediscovered, Gregory Woods describes Exile of Capri:
"A handsome Frenchman in his early 30s meets a beautiful [male] 17-year-old compatriot on the crest of Vesuvius in 1897. Some kind of mutual understanding is achieved, more or less, at first sight - 'They suspected each other of having something more in common than a taste for climbing mountains; something betrayed in the fact that each had obviously selected his guide for his looks' "
"Peyrifitte offers us a version of early 20th century history in which all of the word seems queer."
