When a lawyer is found bludgeoned to death in his own home and Jim Omerod is fingered as the killer, his wife, an ex-girlfriend of Sam Carew's, has nowhere else to turn. Sam believes Jim to be innocent, but his investigation becomes increasingly complicated as he gets involved in a dispute with troublesome local travelers. To make matters even more interesting, his skills are called upon to escort a valuable painting from Amsterdam to Unsworth. It should be a simple operation, but somehow nothing ever is where Sam is concerned. Then there is another gruesome murder...
