Excerpt:
“What’s going on in here?” Edmund’s voice rang out as he shoved in the heavy wooden door of the guest quarters they were staying in.
“Now you’ve alerted the guards” Lorelei said.
“The captain of the guard” Amy corrected.
Lorelei just looked at her with the disdain of a natural born aristocrat.
“It’s okay Edmund” she said as he strode in, taking ahold of his bicep and guiding him deeper into the room. She let her head rest against his arm in, what was to Lorelei, a quite sickening way.
“It is most absolutely not okay” Lorelei said. “You are part elf. Why can’t you learn a basic spell.”
“I don’t know” Amy said meekly, hanging her head. “I’m trying.”
“What spell are you trying to teach her?” Edmund asked.
“I’m trying to teach her to cast a simple bolt of mystical lightning at that target over there.”
“Llewyn’s lightning” or “Bentham’s Bolt?” he asked.
“I don’t know what names your human mages have given it” she said emphasizing the word human in a way that made it clear how inferior mages they made.
“True” Edmund conceded, realizing his error. “But I meant does it call down lightning from the sky, or generate it within herself or perhaps channel it from a different dimension.”
“Generated from within herself obviously.”
“And what’s the problem Amy?” he asked gently.
“I don’t know.”
“What about you?” he asked Lorelei.
“What do you think you’re doing?” she countered. “What do you even know about magic, you’re no mage.”
“No, but I’ve read treatises and studied it.”
Lorelei laughed out loud. “A non-mage reading about magic. That’s priceless.”
“I think it’s cute” Amy said defending him.
“It’s not cute nor humorous. It’s useful.”
“Fine” Lorelei said, obviously humoring him. “What do you think we should do?”
“You’re asking him?” a voice said. “You might as well ask a blind man to describe the sunset.”
“Megan?” Edmund asked eyes wide. She’d been sharp with him ever since the strange invaders had arrived and taken up residence in their castle. He couldn’t think why.
