A #1 New York Times bestseller! Sarah J. Maas's bestselling Crescent City series begins with House of Earth and Blood, which follows the story of half-Fae and half-human Bryce Quinlan as she seeks revenge in a contemporary fantasy world of magic, danger, and searing romance.
I started reading this book expecting it to be somewhat good but had heard from multiple friends that it was very hard to get started and even I struggled when I first attempted to read it. It felt like it threw a lot at you all at once within the first few chapters.I decided to do something I've never done before and that's to write down characters names, their relationship to the main character and what their profession was or some other defining detail.I didn't really have to do that for too long but generally I think it's a good idea to do something like this for future fantasy book reads where there are a lot of characters.ANYWAY... REVIEW STARTS HERESo just.... Wow.This book actually took me by complete surprise and quickly rose to become one of my favourite fantasy books, I enjoyed it more than every ACOTAR series book but whether this takes the throne (pun intended) as best SJM series from Throne of Glass remains to be seen but if this is anything to go on, the outlook is promising.I've only read one other urban fantasy series which I loved but there's something about the way SJM has written this one that makes it feel quite relatable. Part of that is how she's managed to master writing her characters to all feel grounded in relatable reality.I love how she's really put the work into giving each of the characters a unique personality to the point where you just start to know how they might react before you even read it but even the bad/evil characters are written in a way where you can't help but like them to an extent. Now I actually listened to the graphic audio while reading the book and honestly it's the most ultimate experience of reading the book. The cast all fit their characters voices well but this is my personal opinion and others may feel differently. The plot... This is where the book really shines. Main character being given a bogan Holden drivers name aside (thanks Raven 🐦⬛ haha) there's just so many moving parts to the story and while 80% of it reads like a true crime thriller/mystery with fantasy elements thrown in, it really becomes quite easy to follow after the prologue is out of the way.The story definitely had moments where I actually ended up teary eyed and very unexpectedly too which is an achievement in itself. The finale is where the book cemented itself as one of my favourite fantasy books (move over Mistborn) ever and I really hope the rest of the series manages to live up to such a strong start to the series. Well done SJM, you made me not really care as much about the upcoming ACOTAR books anymore haha.
