And here comes this book out of left field, basically destroying everything the other books implied and stated. Nothing is as it seems and that's never been more clear than it is with Maren's story and how she is tied to the Jarreau family. But now everything makes sense.I guessed right with Tevin's mate. That I am not surprised about. I was more surprised by how much Tevin was fighting the bond and trying to say he and Maren shouldn't be together. Over half the book is spent with him saying they shouldn't be together, that they don't work. And then he makes the mistake of agreeing with her when she says they should be apart. Tevin was an idiot for a large portion of this book. Granted, that could be said for all the men in this series. Dominc and Paxton may be better now but they didn't start off that way. And Tevin's reasons for not wanting the bond were much weaker than Dominic's. Dom at least had his pack to worry about. Tevin didn't. Maren was just as ready to protect his sisters as he was. He just couldn't seem to get over himself and worrying about what other people would think. Everything would have been easier if the truth came out sooner.I loved Maren. She was different from how she portrayed herself before Tess and Dominic but it was good seeing into her head and getting an idea of where she was coming from. Learning her story was interesting and really did a flip on what everyone had believed regarding the Jarreau parents. Having all of that come to light was a surprise. I still don't agree that they should have chosen Maren over their own kids but I understand they didn't have much choice when everyone thought they had kidnapped her.Similar to the first book, this one had an additional character who was in love the main female, Maren in this case. Her friend Gael was a rogue who had been with her with Tevin wasn't. Naturally, he had fallen in love with her but she never returned the feelings. I was kind of expecting something to come of it rather than just give Tevin someone to be jealous of. But nope. He would have been the perfect set up for a traitor, thus breaking Maren in a way. But no, the book didn't use that possibility. In fact, the only moles mentioned were in Mills' own pack, placed there by Gael and Maren. But there were none in Dominic's pack? Or among the rogues Maren considered friends? Gael would have been the perfect one for that role. But oh well, I guess.I did like the ending, giving a clear close to the story by promising pups for some of the pairs. It's amazing how things change when actually presented with the possibility. It was a cute end and pointed to another book that is a part of this universe, following Paxton's sister Poppy. I may check that one out next. From the blurb, I'm guessing it is timed before Tevin and Maren's story since Paxton's story was about him reuniting with his family. Poppy was an interesting enough character that I wouldn't mind seeing how she met her mate. So I guess that will be where I head next.
