3.75 stars — Swoony, sweet, and totally bingeableOff to the Races kicks off the Gold Rush Ranch series with all the heart eyes. It’s not super deep, but it is full of chemistry, sweet moments, and all the stuff I love in a romance—big gestures, emotional highs and lows, groveling (yes, please), and doting like no one's business.I’m a sucker for a perceptive character who actually pays attention—and this one delivered. The way they just got each other? Perfection. Is it better than Chestnut Springs? Not really—but it’s got that signature Elsie Silver vibe. Chestnut felt more mature in the writing, but this still totally worked for me. Different series, same obsession.7.75/10. Would recommend if you love swoony romance with a side of heartfelt chaos.

Overall, really cute and enjoyable, didn't fully grip me in, and I struggled to pay attention at some parts, but I had fun non the less!

i’m gonna be so honest here – i skimmed through at least 30% of this. you literally could not pay me to care about any of it.first of all, the horse talk? the excessive horse talk? girl i DO NOT CARE. i don’t care about every little detail of how a horse is cleaned or what happens when they have stomach issues or anything else. i’ve lived in a city known for horses my entire life and have remained clueless for a reason. i don’t care. and why we were so focused on a horse in a romance book, i have no idea!the characters felt surface level and rushed if that makes sense? it felt like i didn’t really know them at all. it was just two people existing. billie felt like a watered down, walmart version of willa from heartless and it was fun at first but got old real quick. vaughn was – as much as he might not want to admit it – an entitled, possessive asshole. i haaaate broody men like him, it’s like they look for reasons to be insufferable.because i didn’t connect to the characters and felt absolutely no chemistry between them, the romance felt forced and awkward. i mean so awkward that reading the spice actually made me uncomfortable because there was not a sprinkle of chemistry there. vaughn’s “dirty talk” actually made me cackle. like, actually cackle. it was not a pretty sight.the third act breakup was stupid and then resolved far too easily. for a girl who claims to be independent and totally-not-falling-for-a-man-like-vaughn, she looked past what he did real fast. and he also came around real fast? like one conversation with his brother and suddenly he’s like oh shit i messed up let me go make the worst business decision ever just to get a girl i hardly know back! they were both dramatic about the whole situation.and this is elsie’s first book ever so i won’t criticize the writing much but the long ass internal monologues got to be way too much. just long paragraph after long paragraph with some dialogue every now and then. that really just shows how much she’s grown as a writer and i love that for her truly.yes, this was disappointing. but am i all that surprised that i hated it? not really. the tropes alone made this iffy for me bc grumpy x sunshine AND boss x employee? two of my least favorite tropes? yeah it was set up to fail from the start.i am excited to continue the series if only because the republished covers are gorgeous and i need them all on my shelf! violet’s book is next and even though i didn’t love her in this one i’m holding out for some eaton brother appearances and good tension with cole so!pre readonly elsie silver has a shot at making me enjoy boss x employee 🧍🏼‍♀️
