In a captivating blend of history, romance, and adventure, an extraordinary tale unfolds that transcends time itself. The narrative follows Claire Randall, a World War II nurse who embarks on a second honeymoon in the Scottish Highlands with her husband, Frank. As she explores the enchanting landscape, the serene journey is abruptly interrupted when Claire is inexplicably transported back to the 18th century, amidst the tumult of Jacobite risings.

In this unfamiliar world, Claire encounters Jamie Fraser, a charming and courageous Scottish warrior who embodies the spirit of a turbulent time. Their connection deepens against the backdrop of political strife and cultural upheaval, creating a powerful bond that defies the constraints of time. Claire finds herself torn between two eras, grappling with her loyalty to her husband and her undeniable love for Jamie.

As Claire navigates the challenges of her new reality, she becomes entwined in a web of intrigue and danger. The stakes are raised as she learns to survive in a world where trust is scarce and every choice could mean peril. Each chapter unravels layers of drama, leaving readers eager to discover how Claire reconciles her past with an uncertain future.

Ultimately, the tale explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the indomitable spirit of a woman striving to chart her own destiny. With richly developed characters and a vivid historical setting, this narrative captivates and enchants, drawing readers into a journey that stretches the boundaries of time and the essence of the human experience.

So obviously I know this story from the TV series, which sometimes, most of the time really, clauses me issue. But the book's are way better because, boy the depth of the story, characters... Your imagination, well they make it ten times more powerful. It's a big book and sometimes I've needed a break, read other lighter books, but I've always come back to Jamie and Claire, when I want to escape deeply into a story.I own my own copies... My daughter in law bought them for me (but I never had time to read them, not did I want to ruin them 😂, they will stay pristine.) But this copy was from the camp library it's the original "Cross Stitch" a 1994 edition 😳.I just need to find Dragonfly in Amber 😁 in the library next... There's all the other books in the current camp library. So maybe I'll skip to Voyager 🤷. I first found this series in early 2006 by accidentally buying a breath of snow and ashes. Which was great but confusing until I realised it was book 5 in the series...I'm determined by the end of next year to have read them all. Diana Gabaldon has created a series that will be a favourite for the remainder of my life reading 😍

Well written, fast paced, interesting plot altogether, but I started falling off and not really listening about half way through, rewinding 3 or 4 times, in order to finally hear the story, not only listen to it. Some (long) scenes I consider excessive - at the time I thought they had some kind of impact on the “future” of the story, but was disappointed to find out it was in the end some kind of filler in the already very long book. Book keeps you captivated, I can’t deny that though. I’m not sure what I was really expecting going in - I postponed reading it for so long - time travel is not an easy subject. I guess I was waiting for more fantasy components added to the “witching” through time perspective, doctoring and such, or at least more of it. I find it rather odd that the shock of finding yourself in another time is non existent, not for Claire, nor for Jamie. They are just accepting it after figuring out that that’s what happened. For me - this was not believable and I would guess all the ramifications of being from the future in a world 200 years prior would have been different. But that’s just my opinion. The feeling is rather controversial. I will read the next book, as it seems that the ratings are better than for the first and maybe, just maybe, further development will be more logical and feel adjusted, all things considered.

On my second attempt, I found myself loving this book.Yes, there are hard scenes of sexual degradation but it was commonplace in the eighteenth century for such things to occur to enforce position and dominance.. But.The vast majority of this book is filled with beautifully written scenes of a Scotland that was (as it is now) searching for the freedom from Britain it so desires... My advice, is to stick to your guns and push forward through the post WW2 chapters till you are taken to Highland Scotland in all it's glory and despair...
