I think this is going to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship, here, Percy. This was so much fun.The Percy Jackson series is one of those series that has been showing up on my recommendations lists for years at this point, probably since it was first published. It was showing up on all of those "Hey, you liked Harry Potter? You should try..." lists too. This is probably why it took me so long to get around to it.I am extremely strange when it comes to recommendations about how much I will love books. That's probably overdue as a topic of its own at some point, but let's just leave it at the more a book is recommended to me, the less likely I am to read it, just out of spite. I almost always regret this in the end (and I am getting better about it!), but it is a consistent problem I will always have to some degree.I deeply resent how long it kept me from starting this series.Mythology has always been a fascination of mine. I adore Arthurian stories. Except for the classics (The Iliad, The Odyssey) I feel like Greek and Roman mythology novels are kind of rare, which is a shame because there is so much that can be done with it. Those gods are kind of messed up, and there are so many ways you can interpret their relationships and they can interact with the world and their demigod children that more ought to be done with it.Rick Riordan clearly realized this hole in literature, especially in YA literature, and decided to fill it. And wow did he manage.I like Percy quite a bit. He is not always the brightest crayon in the box, but he is clever where it counts and certainly brave. He's easy to root for and works extremely well as a main character. He is not a brat and he wants to do the right thing. He reacts to the discovery of his heritage with just the right amount of disbelief--he doesn't carry it too far (that starts to get very annoying in a book), but he doesn't accept it immediately (that is also annoying--this is an amazing thing that you are being told to believe!). His relationship with his mother is well-written and believable, and I feel like he reacts to his father in just the right way as well--he's not completely sure about him. He doesn't overreact to the whole thing and get insanely (stupidly) angry, but he isn't sure he can just accept their relationship quickly, either. In other words, Percy acts the way he should about almost everything, which I love in a character. He is a good guy, but not a perfect guy, and he gets stuff done. He steps up to the plate and handles things and doesn't let fear stand in his way.The other main characters are fantastic, too. There is a bit of a trio going here, just like in Harry Potter (probably one of many reasons it was showing up on all of those lists). Annabeth is the clever one, often good for a sneaky plan or a thoughtful idea or just a snarky comment. She is funny and fun and I love having her along for the ride. Grover is adorably incompetent at an awful lot of things, but is loyal and trustworthy and always there with some kind of attempt to help. The two of them together work fabulously well at keeping Percy sane and intact with everything that is going on.And there is an awful lot going on in this book. Given the title of the book is "The Lightning Thief," you can probably make a decent guess that something has been stolen, but tracking down the thief and running through all the explanations of why is convoluted in the absolute best sense of the word. The book properly "starts" at Camp Half-Blood, which feels a bit like a combination of Hogwarts and the Hunger Games arena. It is dangerous and full of demi-gods who don't always get along (much as their Olympian parents don't), and it is kind of awesome. Once Percy discovers his real heritage and is sent on a quest, I'm actually quite sad to leave the place, because it seems like there is a lot of interesting potential there that will hopefully be explored in later books in the series. The mystery of who stole the lightning takes Percy and friends across the country and through the Underworld itself, and their adventures are always interesting. I made a good guess on part of the solution, but didn't actually get all of it, possibly because stopping to think very hard would have meant I needed to quit inhaling this book.I am currently waiting on my hold on the second book to come in, and it is taking long enough I've considered just outright buying the whole series, I am that invested. I intend to read all of the other (possibly interconnected?) series that Rick Riordan has written as well, because I was completely sold on the combination of mythology and seriousness in the plot and the humor inherent in the characters. The book is highly, highly recommended.

Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can't seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse.

Fast Paced. Witty. Greek Mythology... Rick Riordan delivers a solid beginning to Percy's adventures. Creating a character that, whilst fictional, feels real and relatable thanks to grounded writing and character development.

I had a great time reading this Novel; its charming, energetic, brilliantly written and filled with great characters and world building. I'm definitely exited to read more from this universe.

I absolutely loved it.It reminded me of Alex Rider, which is my book boyfriend (BTW).I am going to have to buy the rest of the series now.I am in love!!!!!!!!!Also, the tension between Annabeth and Percy is just.... I am getting enemies to lovers vibes. For half the book I read Annabeth's name as Annabell, like how did I do that, HOW?? I guess my mind liked Annabell better. I did the BuzzFeed Quiz on which Greek God would be my parent and I got Poseidon, God Of The Sea.I guess I am Percy's younger sister.I also got bad vibes from Luke from the very start. He was a little sus to me and it turned out I was right.

Beware! A Harry Potter copy/knock off. 3 stars is GENEROUS!

To begin with, I'd like to say,I really wanted to like this book, But I couldn't. I had high expectations of this book, since almost all of the fantasy fans like this book and even compare it with Harry Potter. That’s why I’ve been meaning to read it for ages. Of course, there are lots of similarities, but this book has a long way to go to reach the quality of Harry Potter. I’m so disappointed now, I couldn’t get into this book as much as I expect to. Everything seemed unoriginal and forced to, in my opinion. While I was reading it, I couldn’t believe it is the same book I’ve seen lots of good reviews on. I just didn’t understand, I thought maybe something is wrong with me. I just wanted to find reasons why I don’t like it, but at last I decided that not everyone can like the same book! I didn’t want to finish it, but I forced myself somehow to finish at least the first book, I’d thought maybe reading it completely would change my mind, but it didn’t. In the first place, I wanted to rate it 3 stars, even though I didn’t like it as much as expected, I enjoyed some parts, such as: the whole mythology stuff ,or the parts when Percy went to Olympus. But two stars is not that bad, it means it was OK, yes I think it was OK. I liked the beginning that was nice. It encouraged me to keep on reading. But the problem was the more I read, the less my interest became. The amount of action was unbelievable. Predictability was another problem, whenever they visited a new person or place, they got themselves into trouble and something went wrong. I think that’s because it is written for younger audience. I really enjoy reading YA, but this one was my type, I suppose.Percy is so unbelievable. He could defeat his teacher and vaporize her. Even, He could defeat a god, the god of war. How could he do it? I didn’t like him. I think there was not enough character development in his part; I mean even heroes are not at first that perfect, and they experience some defeats at first. Even heroes need some training and gradually they become a hero. What qualities does Percy have to make him an innate hero? I don’t get it. Another problem was his dreams which were REALLY on my nerve, why would he be able to have those dreams; I mean he doesn’t have a scar or something, does he? Why when he thought his mother died just in front of his eyes, he didn’t even shed a tear? And, I didn’t understand why his mother had to put up with a guy she didn’t like. To protect his son? I don’t get it. And, she just could dump him, why did she turn him into a statue and sell him? And, His mission was really something. I mean we have gods here. What kind of gods are they? They are so useless. I don’t care much about the other characters, as well. And I think this book borrows A LOT from Harry Potter which is unbearable for me, such as:1. Percy’s dreams2. His companions are a girl and a boy3. Kronos instead of Voldomort4. Invisibility cloak which I didn’t get why the hell that girl had one. Maybe just for the sake of resemblance to Harry Potter!5. Half-Blood camp instead of Howgarts. There are some other similarities, but I think these are the main ones.Maybe, I’m too harsh with this book. But that’s the way I feel about it. I read some other books which weren’t that great, but I rate them higher. I think I’m really a bit harsh with this book. But, I think in case of other books, at least I cared about the main characters, but in the case of this one I didn’t care about any of the characters. I just want to find more reasons why I didn’t like it much, but I think that’s enough for now. If I come up with some other stuff, I’ll add them later!!

4/5 ⭐: En verdad entré con la esperanza que sea un bien libro (que lo fue) con una buena narrativa (también lo fue) pero me faltó el enganche de querer leerlo de un solo tirón, aún asi, EL PLOT TWIST, whaos.

OMG what a great story.I love the mix of the myths. it made me really think about the myths. and if they were accurate or if it was just a different spin.Favourite character is Grover... which reminds me i have to look up Satyrs again..Anybody who loves Mythology should read this series. It is an easy fun read (that for once in a YA book) wasn't Predictable.

I think the only reason why I didn't write this a 5 out of 5 was because I have watched the original Percy Jackson movie so many times to the point that reading the first book. Literally I had to not only like really force myself to read it. But I was just so bored throughout it because I would read one scene and immediately think of another scene that's about to come up and be like. Oh my God like where is the scene come on like let's go. But overall, I still thoroughly in love the Percy Jackson around the Olympus realm, and I will continue to read the series because I don't really remember anything else aside from the first movie. I remember bits and pieces of the other things, but I don't really see how they're connected, nor do I understand how they're connected and how we went from one thing to the next. But that's also just because I've never watched the rest of the movies nor have I read any of the books.
