A Visit from the Police
Now Joe spoke the last sentence of his prayer, Jonathan, gave up his attempts to enter Jane and Marianne's apartment. He would come back tomorrow with the proper tools. His headache was coming back. Mother was angry tonight. He rubbed his eyes to relieve the pressure but she continued to beat on him from the inside of his skull. He forgot about Madame Bissau who would have been an easy target if she had stayed home. He just wanted to go back home himself.
“I'm sorry, Mama. I am sorry. I was bad.” He murmured as he left.
Jonathan was asleep his face near his grate. When Marianne left the apartment house at dawn and ran as fast as she could to the police station, eight blocks away. She was breathless when she gotten there. The night shift supervisor was still on duty. She was glad; it was not the man, she had talked to the day before. Now she had an entirely different story to tell.
“My Mother, Flossy, is not dead,” she gasped, no longer ashamed to tell who her mother was. “But she is been beat something' terrible. Can you send someone by to listen to her story? She cannot walk.”
No one could have been more disappointed to hear that Flossy was still alive than Bob Cook. It was, he who had arrested Joe the first time and it was he who exulted more than any other police officer in the precinct to hear that witnesses had accused him of another murder.
His night in Joe's cell trying to extract a confession from the grim prisoner had not worked. He had not laid a hand on Joe because that was part of the reason his last case dismissed but he had tried to torture him mentally through the night and now he was tired.
Bob Cook, in reality thought that Joe had done London a favor by getting rid of another old, diseased whore, but that had not tempered his joy over the fact that Joe would die as punishment for the deed. Because of his interest in the case, he decided to go himself to see Flossy and take her testimony.
“My shift is almost over. Can you wait just a half hour while I give report to my relief,” he spoke the question as a........
