It is the 1980's in a small, God-fearing Ontario town. After a lengthy stay in maximum security prison, Lee King returns to a community that still recalls his horrendous crime. His mother is dying, and he wants to see her and his sister, Donna, after so many years. But things in town are not quite right, and Stan Maitland, a retired cop, knows it. Not only does he vividly remember Lee's violence from years before, he gets caught up in the mysterious death of Judy Lacroix, whose body he finds in a car at the abandoned drive-in.
Like the work of Dennis Lehane, The Carpenter is powerful and suspenseful, tinged with dark humour and a touch of noir. It reveals the darkest corners of small town life -- and those of the human heart.
