I enjoyed this story, but it wasn’t memorable. The premise behind the story is that our main female character, Xanthe (Zan-tee), has a special ability that helps her understand where antiques come from. She touches them and has a “dream” as she calls it that shows a bit of history on the item. Her mother Flora accepts her daughter this way and uses this to her advantage in a good way, since she has a huge passion for antiques. These 2 ladies are consistently thrown into money issues because of personal situations that don’t do much to the overall story, but it is part of Xanthe’s character development.
What I am torn with is the romantic side in the story. It’s not part of the driving plot since Xanthe isn’t in 1605 for that but It’s hard to be happy with the ending of the story with the romantic side there. It’s understandable because of the circumstances but it’s very bittersweet. The author’s writing style shows how heartful the words said impacted both characters and as the reader, I felt for them. Parts of the plot just didn’t blend so well with the situation that Xanthe found herself in but pushing through them, I still enjoyed the book. I read this as an audiobook and the narrator did a great job with the character voices but I’m not sure if it was the words written or the narrator herself, but I had to turn 1.20X speed because I felt listening to it was very slow.
