During a bad storm, a military jet is struck by lightning and loses its primary cargo over the town of Carrington. The cargo, a black, metal-like box, lands in the middle of the street in downtown Carrington in the very early morning.
A man driving his pick-up truck through the town sideswipes the box. Strange things begin to happen to the truck. The lights flash, the horn blows, and the radio station dial switches randomly from one station to another. He is terrified and gets out of his truck. He calls the police.
A policeman arrives and discovers a force field that is moving toward an office building. He calls his chief. The chief shows the mayor, and the mayor calls for help.
An army general and several servicemen arrive to try to determine what this is and how to stop its growth. They try explosives, but they are unable to pierce it.
Meanwhile, crowds gather, wondering what caused this phenomenon. Others are skeptical that there is anything there since this force field can't be seen.
Over the next few days, five people mysteriously disappear. A month later, they come back. But are they the same people who left?
