Detective Inspector Amy Winter grapples with a legacy that defines her every move. As the daughter of a notorious serial killer, her pursuit of justice is fraught with both personal and professional challenges. Though she wears the badge with pride, shadows of her past loom large, coloring her interactions and decision-making processes.

Navigating the treacherous waters of crime and morality, Amy strives to forge her own path while coming to terms with her heritage. The weight of her father's crimes influences her perspective on right and wrong, constantly testing her resolve to uphold the law. Each case she investigates serves as a reminder of the duality of human nature—the capacity for both good and evil residing within us all.

As she tackles brain-teasers of the mind and confronts the darkest corners of society, Amy must confront her own demons, all while desperately seeking validation in a world that frequently judges her by her lineage. Readers are drawn into a gripping narrative that explores the complexities of identity, the nature of truth, and the struggle for redemption.

In her quest for justice, Amy Winter is more than just a detective; she is a woman wrestling with her past as she fights to uncover the truth—the ultimate battleground where lies and reality collide. Each twist and turn in the investigation not only brings her face-to-face with criminals but challenges her understanding of herself and her place in a world that can often seem profoundly unjust.

This was an interesting book that made me feel a lot of conflicting emotions. At some points, I really liked it, at other points, I got really frustrated with the main character. I think what saved it for me was the ending. Both the resolutions to Hermione's disappearance and Sally Ann being Elaine surprised me and I think was a good twist. However, I do have some problems with Sally Ann/Elaine The most interesting part, I think, was the push and pull between Amy and Lilian. The cat and mouse game did intrigue me and kept me pretty hooked. It was also interesting to see Lilian force Amy to acknowledge her past by meeting her siblings and their interactions showed how much of an impact their childhood had on the older siblings as well as the difference Amy's upbringing makes Overall, a pretty good book, with the main character growing on me. While it's not a favourite, it was well done, I will most likely be reading future books in the series and from the author. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a copy.
