What Moves the Dead

Nunca tinha lido A Queda da Casa de Usher, de Poe, e gostei muito que essa edição trouxe o conto original no final. Depois de ler os dois, ficou bem claro como a autora conseguiu aproveitar a essência da obra, mantendo a atmosfera sombria e misteriosa, mas criando uma história com identidade própria.Em vez de simplesmente recontar o conto, ela expandiu a história, acrescentando novos personagens e mistérios. As referências ao texto original deixam a leitura ainda mais interessante, mas o livro funciona muito bem por conta própria, mesmo para quem nunca leu Poe.Também gostei bastante da escrita. É leve, fluida e faz a leitura andar muito rápido. No fim, achei uma releitura muito bem feita, que presta uma bela homenagem ao conto sem deixar de contar sua própria história.

2.5 stars but there is no 1/2 stars so round it up to 3 The beginning of the story was so draining, and it was hard to get used to this type of writing style. However, toward the very end, as the mystery finally started to unravel, it got really interesting. The way the investigation wrapped up actually kind of reminded me of Sherlock Holmes.

Very good short little horror read, and my first Kingfisher too, and I gotta say - I'm impressed. Four stars cause I wish there was more, as I usually do with some of these shorter books, but what was there was still very high quality. Very nicely written characters and plot twists, even if a little dragged out at points.I probably have to read the original version of the House of Usher now...
