Captain James Cook was a British explorer, navigator, and cartographer, renowned for his three voyages in the Pacific Ocean and his contributions to the mapping of the region. Born in 1728, Cook began his career in the British merchant navy before joining the Royal Navy, where he quickly gained a reputation for his excellent navigational skills. His first major voyage, from 1768 to 1771, aimed to observe the transit of Venus and led to the discovery of New Zealand and the eastern coast of Australia, which he famously claimed for Great Britain.
