Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail, more commonly known as Allan Kardec, was a French educator and the founder of the spiritualist movement known as Spiritism. He was born in Lyon and spent much of his life developing and popularizing the principles of Spiritism, which sought to explore the relationship between the physical and spiritual worlds.
