Ideas of community, leadership, and the rule of law are called into question as the reader has to consider who has a right to power, why, and what the consequences of the acquisition of power may be. Often compared to Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies also represents a coming-of-age story of innocence lost.

I did not finish the book but I simply could not continue. I love classics, dont get me wrong, but the characters did not act their age, nor were the descriptions of the environment effective. I picked up this book several times this week to read it I just could not get passed those details.
I went into this book with a pretty negative outlook on it, but I enjoyed it more than I expected. It was nothing like what I expected. I feel like boys who enjoyed Hatchett on sixth grade might like it. It reminds me a bit of Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer, or even the lost boys from Peter Pan, but with a deeper meaning than those comparisons. I feel like high school girls who are required to read this books are less likely to get into it, which automatically made it lose a star. Sometimes I wonder why we still require students to read "the ckassics" because I feel like it turns then off from reading, but I see some redeeming value in this one. Glad I read this one along with my two seniors!
