A “hypnotic” (The New York Times Book Review) collection of four novellas—including the inspirations behind the films Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption—from Stephen King, bound together by the changing of seasons, each taking on the theme of a journey with strikingly different tones and characters.
When Stephen King is on, he's really on. A master of short fiction. Even though I've seen the film adaptation several times, this was still a really enjoyable read. I'm giving it 4 stars because, unfortunately, King, like so many other white writers, suffers from Quentin Tarantino syndrome. The incessant need to use the n-word. Its use adds nothing to the story. But for readers like me who are completely blindsided by the casual racism they sprinkle throughout their work it definitely takes away
