説明

In a world where ambition and identity clash, a young Black man named Damon became the unlikely protagonist of a corporate jungle. Embracing the cutthroat environment of a sales firm, he transforms from a barista in a coffee shop to a top-performing employee, navigating the challenges of race, culture, and his own values amidst the pressure for success. The story pulls the reader into a pulse-pounding narrative filled with humor and wit that captures the absurdity of corporate culture.

Damon's journey is interwoven with poignant reflections on the societal expectations placed on him and the dynamics of privilege and opportunity. As he climbs the corporate ladder, he grapples with the implications of his newfound status and the sacrifices it demands. The characters around him bring both camaraderie and conflict, serving as a mirror to the complexities of ambition in a racially charged landscape.

This novel resonates with anyone who has ever questioned their place in a system designed to favor the few over the many. With sharp commentary and an engaging storyline, the narrative not only entertains but also challenges the reader to confront their own perceptions of success and identity.

The satirical story of a Black man named Darren working his way up through the sales department of a tech start up, where he becomes known as Buck due to his previous job at Starbucks. The startup has a bit of a cult-like atmosphere, and it separates him from his community and family. Darren also faces numerous microaggressions, being the only Black employee and the ways they try to use him to show their diversity. The book is quite a journey for Darren as he tries to figure out where he belongs and who he is. There were parts I loved, like the early days of him working at the startup and later in the end as he tries to help others. But there were also parts that were just a bit far-fetched. The unevenness made it a 3 star read for me, though there were parts that were 5 stars. I also have to give props to the audiobook narrator who was great, it definitely added something nice to the story.
