Took me a while to finish because it's both a chunky book and I've been busy in my personal life lately, but it was absolutely worth sticking with this book until the end.I knew going in that this was Sanderson's debut novel, my first Sanderson book and one that the community doesn't seem to favour all that much in comparison to his other books, so I was open minded as I read it, not expecting perfection on the first go.The first half of the book is a bit of a drag, a lot of political back and forth, world building and explaining just about everything. Which is usually common for long fantasy novels like this, but past the halfway mark, the book changes completely. Everything becomes much more intriguing, things start to come together and characters really start developing. I really loved all of the main characters, while enjoying some of the side characters (while others felt a little flat).Overall, a very good debut novel, one that I thoroughly enjoyed the latter half of. Especially the characters Hrathen and Galladon, they are my two favourites and I love them both equally....Even if Hrathen clearly has the absolute best character development overall. :)

Elantris is my introduction to Brandon Sanderson’s world, and while I found it captivating at times—with characters I genuinely enjoyed—the story ultimately left me wanting more. The premise is intriguing and the political and magical elements are interesting, but the pacing and resolution didn’t fully deliver the impact I was expecting. The ending, in particular, felt somewhat rushed and incomplete, as if something essential was missing. While I can see the potential and understand why many readers love it, I personally struggled to connect with the depth I was anticipating. At times, it reads more like a quiet, almost cozy fantasy centered on characters navigating their circumstances rather than a sweeping, epic narrative.Overall, a mildly disappointing experience, but still an interesting introduction to Sanderson’s work.
