But they would not believe any one would assassinate the nation's chosen. They had not become so used then to scenes of blood, and little knew of the terrible malignity of those passions which had been set on fire of hell. To fight a duel, they said, was chivalrous and like the New World, but to strike with the dagger or the bullet by stealth was like the Old World dastardly, cowardly, mean, felonious.
