Considering Holly Black is one of my favourite authors, I definitely expected something a bit better.The first 75 pages of this book almost had me giving up, but because it was written by Holly Black, I decided to at least give it to the half way mark. Thankfully, that was a good choice as I started to enjoy it by then, and the binged the rest of the book. There is a lot I could say about this book and why it wasn't as good as I was hoping. The other reviews have it all basically covered though. What I will say, is switching from her YA books to this adult debut, her writing suddenly felt convoluted. Like she had to over explain and add a lot of pointless details and weird world building for her book to be classed as 'adult'. The second half of the book got better though and I am hoping that the next book will be even better.I will be giving book 2 a chance.

¿Para cuándo la segunda parte? ¡Lo deja en un punto muy interesante!Sus personajes moralmente grises son muy interesantes, y tiene una protagonista delincuente a la que a veces cuesta tragar, la verdad. También a veces me hacía un poco de lío con los nombres y los hechos.A pesar del lenguaje vulgar, no se abusa de ello y eso me ha gustado mucho.
Meet Charlie Hall. She is the main character of this story. A woman with a strange childhood, a grudge and a talent for theft. Charlie is an ex-con artist in a mundane world riddled with magic. Due to current events, she finds herself mixed up with all the wrong people and it seems like she'll have to make a return to conning.With shadows and magic filled books, the stakes are higher than ever and everyone Charlie loves hangs in the balance.To me this was an easy read, nothing complicated just a good plot and simple language. Holly Black dives straight into this book not wasting anytime. You are instantly thrown into Charlie's life and the drama that fills it. Book of night has titled chapters that have relevance to what happens within them. Every so often the chapters are titled 'The Past' sometimes they are Charlie's past and other times they belong to somebody else. It made the perspective of 'The Past' chapters a little hard to place at times with it not stating who's past it was going to unveil.The beginning of the book didn't start off brilliantly. Seen as you are thrown into the throng of this story, I felt as though I was going blindly into oncoming traffic. There is vocabulary like in any fantasy book, that is new to the reader and it was all a bit overwhelming trying to follow the story line and wrap my head around new discoveries. Despite this, as the story progressed it became seemingly better. As I write this review I have also read The Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black. I'd like people to know that Book of Night is not to be compared to that series. Holly Black has shown a dark side to her fantasy writing which I enjoyed very much. Book of night has many layers. From the plot to the characters I was never bored. There were quite a few side characters that I came to love and hate. It kept things interesting having such a range of characters, although it is sometimes hard to keep up with how they connect to the story. If you want; a female main character, a little bit of romance, shadow magic, gruesome deaths, an evil billionaire, and a whole lot of twists and turns then this is definitely the book for you.
First half was so slow and our main character is whiny. Second half was good and I rushed through it. Ending was hard but not bad, just wish the first part of the book was as good. World building is on point
