If her shuttle had not been sabotaged, Nävis would not have landed on the planet where the Mekkas persecute the Gunjinn people. She would never have involved herself with the Hembras that, under the pretence of protection, live in submission to the Mekkas. She would not have to traverse this ruined world in search of Snivel, who had been captured by one of the most pitiless enemies she has ever faced. And she would never have thought that a people could be so cynical as to play with the lives of people as if they were not real.
