説明

Mine has been a life of much shame. I can't even guess myself what it must be to live the life of a human being.

Portraying himself as a failure, the protagonist of No Longer Human narrates a seemingly normal life even while he feels incapable of understanding human beings. Oba Yozo's attempts to reconcile himself to the world around him begin in early childhood, continue through high school, where he becomes a "clown" to mask his alienation, and eventually lead to a failed suicide attempt as an adult. Without sentimentality, he records the casual cruelties of life and its fleeting moments of human connection and tenderness.

Semi-autobiographical, No Longer Human is the final completed work of Osamu Dazai. Still one of the ten bestselling books in Japan, No Longer Human is a powerful exploration of an individual's alienation from society.

I don't understand how people like him. At first I found him relatable but then no. I pity the lovers and his wife.

I just finished No Longer Human, and this is easily one of the best books I’ve read this year. It’s not emotional in the usual sense. It’s disturbing. It’s uncomfortable. It feels like watching someone peel their own mind apart layer by layer. The way Dazai writes about loneliness, morality, deceit, sex, class, addiction, and the whole “acting normal for other people” thing is sharp and brutally honest. Yozo’s voice is messed up, confused, intelligent, self-aware, and completely lost, and that combination makes the whole book feel real in a way that’s hard to explain. The last section hit the hardest for me. The whole synonyms and antonyms part, the talk about crime and God, and everything that happens with his wife and society closing in was just brilliant. Not dramatic, not sentimental — just raw and frightening. This wasn’t a sad read for me. It was a horrifying one. Dark, honest, and uncomfortable in the best way. One of those books that stays in your head long after you close it.

I don't remember much about the book. The parts I do remember I thoroughly enjoyed. I was so excited to get to reading this book but I unfortunately didn't really like it as much as I hoped. I feel like the only reason why is because I wasn't really focused while reading it; I had to keep redirecting my attention to the book. I think it was in all honesty the writing style that lost me. Aside from all that the parts I remember and did focus on were enjoyable to read. I'm not sure I think overall for me the book was just simply a hit and miss.
