Als kleines Kind hat Jem mit angesehen, wie ihre Mutter an einer Überdosis gestorben ist. Seitdem ist sie von einer Pflegefamilie zur anderen weitergereicht worden. Deshalb wundert es auch keinen, dass sie ruppig und kontaktscheu ist. Nicht mal in die Augen sehen kann sie einem, sagen sie in der Schule. Und das stimmt – wenn auch aus einem anderen Grund, als alle vermuten. Denn Jem hat eine besondere Gabe: Wenn sie jemandem ansieht, erscheint in ihrem Kopf eine Zahl. Es ist das Datum, an dem diese Person sterben wird. Jem lässt niemanden an sich heran – sie weiß ja, wann der andere sterben wird ... Doch dann lernt sie den verrückten, hibbeligen Spinne kennen. Als sie Riesenrad fahren wollen, sieht Jem plötzlich, dass alle Menschen um sie herum noch am selben Tag sterben werden. Sie und Spinne rennen weg, kurz bevor die Bombe hochgeht. Und von diesem Augenblick an sind sie auf der Flucht. Denn man hat sie weglaufen sehen, und wie sollen sie erklären, warum sie von dem Attentat wussten? Die Flucht ist alles andere als romantisch, die beiden frieren und hungern. Doch auf ihrer Flucht lernen sie einander besser kennen, und Jem verliebt sich in Spinne.
