Quinca Borba

Quincas "To the victor, the potatoes!"

Dive into the brilliant and cynical mind of Machado de Assis. Rubião, a naïve provincial teacher, sees his life transformed when he inherits an incalculable fortune from a mad philosopher. The only condition? To take care of the deceased's dog, who is also named Quincas Borba.

Moving to Rio de Janeiro, Rubião believes he has the world at his feet. However, he soon becomes prey to the social elite, specifically the couple Cristiano Palha and the beautiful Sofia. Caught in a web of seduction, flattery, and financial interests, Rubião experiences firsthand the philosophy of "Humanitas": the law of the survival of the fittest, where the weak are merely stepping stones for the ambitious.

A masterful satire on social climbing, madness, and the brutality hidden beneath the masks of civility. Discover why this is one of the greatest works of Latin American literature.
