説明

Back in high school, the bullies called him “Leo–Nard the Retard.” He’s not retarded, but Leo Hightower understands he’s not normal either. The politically correct term is “Special Needs.” Leo has them. His father, Charlie Hightower, has reminded Leo for years that needs, no matter how “special,” can eventually be fulfilled.

Now twenty-one, after witnessing the shocking murder of his father, Leo must begin life as an independent adult, much sooner than expected. Can he do it?

Leo knows he can. The pills help control his ADHD; strict regimens allow him to accomplish daily routines; and, inside his head, he can still hear his dad’s guiding voice.

As Leo adjusts to his new responsibilities, he touches the lives of others who are eventually able to look past his special needs and instead see his strengths. Lieutenant Sam Stevens is the recently promoted police detective charged with solving Charlie’s murder. The investigation is stalled until the unlikely Leo provides the detective with his first major break. Earl Davis is the disenchanted pro at Charlie’s golf club. His recognition of Leo’s gift rekindles Earl’s enthusiasm and love for the game. Michelle Preston last saw Leo five years ago in middle school. She meets him again by chance and is amazed by and attracted to the dramatic changes in him.

Just as Leo becomes more comfortable with his new life, he is forced to face unexpected challenges. Chief among Charlie’s killer is now targeting Leo.

There are millions of children who have special needs. There are millions of parents who sacrifice and do all they can to help these children reach their potential in life. And there are millions of others whose lives are touched by these children and parents. I wrote Special Needs for all of them.
