This book is not your typical science or biography book. I initially expected it to delve into the science behind HeLa cells while interspersing Henrietta Lacks' biography, and it does that to some extent at the beginning. However, as you progress through the book, you realize it's much more than that. It shifts the focus to Henrietta Lacks' family and explores how they were profoundly impacted by the HeLa cells. In particular, we get to know Henrietta's daughter, Debra, and gradually gain insight into how someone with limited scientific knowledge coped with the trauma of not understanding what was happening in the scientific realm. The book also raises thought-provoking questions, such as those concerning the ethics of cellular tissue research, highlighting the complexities and nuances within our current situation, where there are both positive and negative aspects to consider.
