One of the many outcomes resulting from the explosion in internationaltrade is access to lower-cost production opportunitiesthrough outsourcing. This phenomenon has increased attentionto supply chains, the information technology needed to coordinatethem, and the need for this relatively complex enterprise to beexceptionally well managed.There are obviously potential cost benefits to using a robust globalsupply chain. However, opportunities to lower supply costs cansometimes vanish due to such unforeseen problems as tsunamis,earthquakes, political unrest, and economic turbulence.
