説明

Sloane lives in a society where expressing genuine emotions is considered a threat. In this dystopian backdrop, the government has implemented a program designed to eliminate any risk of self-harm by erasing the feelings that lead to it. As a result, Sloane and her peers navigate an existence stripped of authenticity, grappling with the shadows of suppressed emotions while the growing epidemic of teen suicide looms over them.

Sloane's reality is further complicated when she loses someone close and is forced to confront the deep pain and confusion that arise from such loss. As she and her friends begin to question the rigid laws governing their lives, they must decide whether to conform to societal expectations or risk everything for true emotional connection. The stakes are high, and each choice could mean the difference between life and a hollow existence.

Amidst the turmoil, bonds of friendship deepen and unexpected love ignites. Sloane finds herself determining what it means to truly live—and whether the pursuit of genuine emotions is worth the price. This harrowing journey challenges her to face both her inner demons and the oppressive system designed to crush hope.

Honestly I was left thinking about this book for days. The concept of The Program is so sad for so many reasons. They can't grieve their losses without getting flagged for being sick. They have to live their lives hiding their emotions while be scruntinized the whole time, at home and in school, by their family who are also suffering. The thought that anyone could change/remove someone’s memories against their will is terrible, a huge violation. I found that their constant fear and emotions were portrayed so well. This is a story about who we are. The Program is meant to make them better but would you rather hold onto all the pain and suffering in your life or have it taken away and completely lose yourself? It would be really interesting to see what would happen if the teens did have a choice in the matter.

Goed verhaal, wel iets te veel gehuil, drama en expliciete romantische omschrijvingen, maar niet slecht.
