리뷰

This is a book you don't want to miss! Its title might suggest a tale of love, fervent and passionate at best. But the core of its content offers much more than that! This work is a thorough analysis of life, love, people, their feelings and their intentions. Philosopher Soren Kierkegaard had once said that life can only be understood backward though it must be lived forward. This book will give you the opportunity to understand the depth and accuracy of this statement, but also to see and witness the meaningless suffering of life forming at last a definite structure, and giving meaning and poise to a shaky past. This book is another masterpiece in which the author had retained his complex style of characterization. People are neither Good nor Evil but an ultimate mixture of both. Accordingly, the protagonist of the tale whom we follow from early youth to the seventh decade of his life through episodes of madding passion and bitter suffering is no pure hero and no saint. Florentino Ariza whose love for Fermina Daza had lasted more than fifty years is also the sex addict who strived to conceal his adventures from her notice in order to make her believe he had remained faithful to her memory all his life. The socio-cultural circumstances of the Caribbean costs had not escaped the scrutiny of the author either. With great skill he had squeezed the dreadful years of the plague, the poverty-stricken quarters, slavery, sex abuse, corruption, conventions, and unhappy marriages into the leaves of a love tale giving it thus the realistic aspect of life with is capacity of bringing love and hatred, beauty and ugliness, joy and sadness to the same individuals in no more than a quarter of an hour. When it comes to the structure and literary techniques of the book, Garcia Marquez had embedded his tale in Post Modernism. Every single detail in the plot is debatable and open to interpretation. Nothing is definite, not even the sweeping emotions of the focal characters. Thus, everything is questioned in a tale subjected to temporal distortion, and following the stream of consciousness of its characters. Whether you're reading for pleasure of for academic purposes, this book is a masterpiece in its genre. You might as well read and consider its reflection on your own lives and your own decisions.
