A Wild Noir Thriller“You can’t tame what's wild and there’s no reason to want to.”I listened to the audiobook ARC provided by NetGalley and Macmillan Audio and narrated by Andrew Eiden. The narrator’s voice made me view this book as a noir type cop thriller, and I have no complaints about it! The overall tone of his voice just reminded me of that black and white polished detective noir movie or show. He handled all the character’s voices very well and didn’t break my immersion of the story.🌲🌲🚘🐺🚘🌲🌲“Every once in a while, maybe a car drives by and its headlights are shining through the dark, reminding you of that particular kind of light of your old house. That forgotten kind. And even though the night is far more beautiful, far more luminous and expansive than that man-made 3-dimensional home ever was, maybe when we remember it, we get nostalgic, curious because of what it activates in us from memory. We lift our heads, so to speak, and think what is that? And think we should walk towards it, maybe like the radio signals.”In contrast to the typical black and white noir piece, this story has a gritty dark nature spin.Nothing is really black and white, there is no good and evil, everyone has their story. I usually find all characters in this type of story annoying or frustrating, but I think I understood and related to bits of all these characters in the book. Each action had a reason and there were no blatant plot-only driven decisions. “Maybe our headlights for some reason shine a little to the other side, our signal sometimes gets a little crossed.”Cop thrillers are not my typical genre but I love wilderness and horror so I really enjoyed this story through the strange twists and turns. CJ has so much range as an author from what I’ve seen so far and must say I’m a fan. I’ve only read one CJ Leede book before, Mavefly, of which I loved, and American Rapture has been sitting in my TBR pile. They all have such uniquely weird premises, I think she may be an autobuy author for me after this. 🐺Thanks to NetGalley & Macmillan Audio for my audiobook ARC.🎧#Headlights #CJLeede #NetGalley
