I don’t think I have ever read a book by Rick Riordan that is bad - I just don’t think that would ever be possible because it’s obvious that Riordan loves what he writes and this is no exception. I really enjoyed this sample of The Sun and the Star, and I have a feeling that the full novel will have you unable to put the book down as everything I’ve ever read from this series has been a page-turner and left me exhilarated. This is the first in a new series from the Percy Jackson world, and has Nico Di Angelo, the son of Hades taking the lead and he seems to be a fantastic choice - even in this sample you get insight into the kind of personality he has - sarcastic and all too aware of his parentage so he’s a little dark and moody. In comparison, his boyfriend is Will Solace, one of the many children of Apollo, so he's the polar opposite and seems to radiate positivity and the sunshine itself.I loved how we have mentions of familiar faces from the original Percy Jackson series, both in passing and in person and it makes you feel like you’re being welcomed back home.I have to say how much I love Riordan’s acceptance of the LGBTQ community and how easy he writes characters who may be in a same-sex relationship such as Nico and Will in this book. I wish more authors were as inclusionary as he is.
