This is a book I’ve wanted to read for so long and I’m so glad I decided to myself that I’m not waiting any longer and Icarus was coming off my towering TBR list.I loved this book. It was beautifully written, and K. Ancrum has earned a place on my “must-read” list because of the way the characters are written. Ancrum makes you want to reach into the pages and hug characters like Icarus, who desperately needs affection. This boy has been deprived of the love, care, and understanding a parent should give, and my heart nearly broke when he finally received it and fell apart and struggled with how he handled being cared about by others.This is very much a story about Icarus and Helios and the fact that have been made to suffer due to the actions of their fathers and boy, did I despise both adults in the story; especially Icarus’s father who has all but imprisoned his child whilst he’s lost to his circle of grief and revenge. Icarus’s father lost his wife but forgets that his son lost his mother and isn’t even able to grieve properly because what his father wants comes first. The man is appalling and I wanted nothing more than to see the son find a way to truly live because Ancrum keeps the reader on the edge of their seat waiting for things to go wrong at every turn of the page.Icarus is a slow-burn romance between Icarus and Helios, but it is also a story of Icarus’s growth and his strength in deciding he has lived under his father’s will for too long and wants more from life. You will find yourself cheering him on as he lets the few teens he is allowed to know at school become real friends and learns that he can trust them — and himself. I think all you will want as you read is for a happy ever after for Icarus, who through his own talent and the insistence of his father is a very talented artist, and to be honest I didn’t even need it to be with Helios but just to enjoy the happiness of using his skills in a good way and to see the world beyond the house he’s never truly lived in, but existed.Icarus was wonderful, I loved the characters who were beautifully written, and the twists we go on to give Icarus a new choice when the sun rises away from his normal routine. I hadn’t known what to expect but came away feeling extremely happy with how everything came to an end.
This is an absolutely amazing book I had this book recommended to me by a friend and I'm so glad I listened to them to read it. The representation is amazing if you're looking for a book that has lgbtq and mental health themes
