Lightning's Child

During an artillery barrage at the Civil War battle of Antietam in 1862, a young colonel lost his leg. More than 155 years later, he loses the same leg in a traffic accident! Diane Kowalski, a genetics expert, analyzes the amputee’s DNA while he’s hospitalized and discovers a mutation that could increase longevity, and make limb and organ regeneration possible. However, the injured man disappears and a saboteur destroys the DNA experiment. Private investigator Jack O’Sullivan follows clues that lead to Thomas Winthrop, founder of a prestigious genetics research laboratory. Winthrop admits to having a natural mutation, but co-opts Jack and Diane with the promise that he will develop a gene therapy to extend his gift to humanity. However, the mutant’s many descendants oppose their patriarch’s plan, arguing that it would lead to overpopulation, economic chaos, famine and war. Lightning’s Child is a novel about the latest scientific advances that soon may allow the human species to control its evolutionary destiny.
