London Delftware

"Delftware" or tin-glazed earthenware was first made in London (Aldgate) in 1571 - some thirty years before it was first made in the Dutch city of Delft from which it derives its popular name. This book traces two and a half centuries of production. There were some nineteen delftware potteries in and around London, and painstaking research by the author has revealed fascinating and valuable information on the potters themselves, the pot-houses in which they worked and the articles which they made, thus combining social history, archaeology, and ceramics. 8x10", 202 pp., b&w photographs, maps, 16 pp. color plates.
