This book had so much more going on than just the romance aspect. Both MC’s had individual family trauma- Ava’s lost memories and Alex’s revenge plot- that added a little mystery and suspense, making it an engaging read that I finished in one sitting. While none of the plot twists surprised me and some of it felt like watching a cheesy soap opera, it was still entertaining. The romance really shines in the first half of the book. I like how naturally the relationship develops between Ava and Alex and there were a lot of cute moments between them. The second half is where it fell a bit flat for me. Alex is that epitome of possessive, alpha male that usually works for me in a book, but would never fly in real life. Unfortunately, he didn’t quite work for me in the book either. There were parts where he was just weird… and the degradation kink is not my cup of tea, so that may have influenced it too. I did like that Ava and her brother reacted realistically after such a betrayal and there wasn’t a rush to make it happily ever after with everyone at the end. I loved Ava’s friend group. I feel like they are the stars of the book and I would read the others in the series for them alone.
